How a Corner of the House Became the Most Important Room of the School Year

Teacher Mariel Martinez of Project Playtime joins SM Home Masterclass this May to walk parents through the developmental thinking behind a study space — and SM Home brings the pieces that make it work at home

22 May 2026, MANILA, PHILIPPINES — In a hybrid school year, the most consequential room in the house is often the one no one notices. It is not the living room and not the bedroom. It is the corner where a child sits down to do homework.

At Start Smart for School, the May edition of SM Home Masterclass on Friday, May 22, SM Home turns its attention to the home study zone — and to the small, intentional design choices that determine whether a child can actually focus there.

The module brings together two voices. Teacher Mariel Martinez — a licensed speech-language pathologist from the University of the Philippines Manila with more than twelve years of clinical experience — will share the developmental thinking behind how a child’s environment, routines, and sense of ownership shape their ability to focus. SM Home’s team will translate that thinking into the home: the desk, the chair, the lighting, the storage, the small design choices that make a study zone work in a real Filipino household.

Teacher Mariel is the creator of Project Playtime (@project.playtime), a free educational resource where she shares practical talking and play tips through her widely followed #EducReels series. She is also the founder of BOOST Therapy Center in Makati. Across more than a thousand Filipino families she has worked with, the throughline of her practice has been the same: small, intentional changes in a child’s daily environment can produce outsized changes in how they learn. Her contribution to the Masterclass focuses on early childhood communication and learning readiness — the developmental foundations that make a child capable of focused work in the first place. SM Home’s curated picks then turn those foundations into a physical setup any household can build.

The session will walk guests through how to set up a study area that works, whether the family has a full room to dedicate or only a corner of a shared bedroom. The principles are the same: a desk at the right height, a chair the body can sit in for an hour, light that does not strain the eyes, and storage that keeps the day’s materials within reach but out of view when the day is done.

The featured product story is built around brands SM Home has trusted for years. The Moment Study Table and Easy Study Desk anchor the workstation. The Hosh Study Shelf and Mallow Display Rack handle vertical storage and personal display — important for a child who needs to feel ownership of the space. Lunarx and Vista table lamps cover task lighting, including a rechargeable Lunarx option for households navigating energy schedules. The Mr. Big Rebacka back support pillow and Knit office chairs make extended seating possible for younger bodies.

Around the perimeter, smaller details do most of the work. Umbra’s Bellwood organizer system keeps desktops uncluttered. Charlotte lidded baskets with chalkboard labels turn open storage into something a child can actually maintain. Aromatic crystal diffusers signal that the study zone is its own kind of space — a quieter one.

“The study zone is not about square meters,” said Janice T. Yang, Business Unit Head of SM Home. “It is about intention. When a child has a space that is clearly theirs — a chair that fits, a light that turns on, a place for their books — they show up differently. That is what we are helping familiesbuild.”

The Study Zone module is paired with The Baon System, led by bento mom Nikki Garcia (@mrsnikkigarcia_), for a complete look at the two daily systems that hold a Filipino school year together.
