This mom loves and takes care of her family. But when she was told she had cancer in the summer of 2022, her life took a huge turn. It was like a ton of bricks fell on her family. But in the midst of all the uncertainty, she showed us how strong she really was, unmasking her inner power that people never knew existed.

Her battle with cancer was hard on her body and on her mind. The treatments were painful, and and it was an emotional rollercoaster. But she never gave up. Her spirit was strong and didn’t break. No matter what problems she faced, she faced them head-on and never lost her resolve. Her positive attitude was like a beacon of hope, guiding the people around her through the darkest times.

Throughout the tough times, her family, friends, and the community rallied around her. They formed a tight-knit support system, showing how much they cared. They all came together to lift her up and let her know she wasn’t alone in this fight. Through Her Own Words: A Mother’s Fight Against Cancer

Allow me to provide you with the questions and answers that will allow her to narrate her personal journey.

Background and Diagnosis:

Q: Can you share the moment when you were first diagnosed with cancer? How did you feel at that time?

Mommy Annette: On June 14, 2022, I found myself at Marikina Valley Hospital for a hysteroscopic myomectomy to tackle a stubborn tumor. The biopsy results were released on June 30, and I was advised to have a sit-down with my doctor.

Feeling a mix of anxiety and apprehension, I met with my OB on July 4. The words she shared hit me hard – the biopsy results weren’t what I hoped for. Denial took over as I questioned, “Why me? What had I done to deserve this?” The weight of my own mortality and the uncertainty of the future pressed heavily on my mind, especially with the desire to witness more milestones with my grandchildren.

Q: What type of cancer were you diagnosed with, and what stage was it in?

Mommy Annette: The diagnosis was endometrial cancer, marked as high grade. High-grade cancer carries the potential to spread to other parts of the body through blood or lymph systems, forming new tumors.

Q: How did the diagnosis impact your perspective on life and your future plans?

Mommy Annette: This diagnosis altered my outlook profoundly. It unveiled life’s fragility and the significance of cherishing moments with loved ones. It compelled me to reevaluate priorities, emphasizing what truly matters. My future goals shifted to center on health, spending quality time with family, and creating lasting memories. The uncertainty taught me to treasure each day and to stay strong, embracing the love and support around me.

Challenges and Resilience:

Q: What were the most challenging aspects of undergoing cancer treatments?

Mommy Annette: Cancer treatments have been quite the journey, dear. The financial stress, especially coming after the pandemic, was quite overwhelming. The physical toll is no joke either. Chemotherapy and radiation bring fatigue, nausea, hair loss, and pain – a real struggle.

Q: Was there a time when you wanted to give up? Can you describe a particularly tough moment during your journey and how you found the strength to overcome it?

Mommy Annette:
Honestly, maraming beses na. Isip ko matanda na ako, and I achieved a lot sa buhay. Pero I realized paano yung maiiwan ko? Kelangan ko lumaban para sa kanila at mas importante para sa sarili ko. Inisip ko na lang having cancer is a blessing in disguise. I have a chance to spend more time with my family. And I don’t want to waste my time nagmukmok all the time. Yes, I still cry. It’s normal. Pero I chose to inspire others the best way I can. Hoping yung mga simpleng bagay na ginagawa ko ay makatulong sa ibang may same na pinagdadaanan ko. (There have been many times, honestly. I thought I was already old, and I had achieved a lot in life. But then I realized, what will happen to those who I would leave behind. I need to keep fighting for them and, more importantly, for myself. I just thought that having cancer is a blessing in disguise. It gives me a chance to spend more time with my family. And I don’t want to waste my time sulking all the time. Yes, I still cry. It’s normal. But I chose to inspire others the best way I can. Hoping that the simple things I do will help others going through the same things I am)

Aside sa pain, mas masakit for me makita mga anak ko to suffer. We don’t have much, kaya need namin maghatihati sa gastusin and we even asked for help para mairaos ang chemo and radiation. Instead na ibigay for my grandchildren, nabawasan pa budget nila. But I’m really thankful sa lahat ng tumulong. (Aside from the pain, it’s even more painful for me to see my children suffer. We don’t have much, so we need to share expenses and we even asked for help to go through the chemo and radiation. Instead of giving it to my grandchildren, their budget was further reduced. But I’m really thankful for everyone who helped.)

My family and friends, my support system, became my saving grace. Their love and presence provided me with the courage to persevere. I also joined a support group of fellow cancer fighters. Sharing our experiences helped me find the determination to keep going.

Q: Were there any specific activities, hobbies, or practices that helped you maintain a positive outlook and stay motivated?

Mommy Annette: Watching videos of my grandchildren truly uplifted me. Their laughter and smiles brought immense joy. I made it a ritual to call and talk to them, which brightened my days. Watching funny videos online lightened my mood and momentarily took my mind off worries.

Q: How did your family’s support contribute to your strength and determination?

Mommy Annette: My family’s unwavering support was a cornerstone throughout my journey. Their presence, love, and care made a world of difference. Their encouragement provided a sense of security and comfort during tough times. Their practical assistance allowed me to focus on healing. Their belief in my resilience boosted my determination, reminding me of the fighter I’ve always been. Their positivity and celebration of small victories inspired me to keep pushing forward.

Q: In what ways do you believe your experience with cancer changed you as a person?

Mommy Annette: My journey with cancer reshaped my life. It compelled me to support others facing similar battles, emphasizing the importance of positivity and resilience.
