Today, October 5, 2010, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day to commemorate the anniversary of the signing in 1966 of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. It is an occasion to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.
However, in the Philippines, the tribute already begun as PLDT-SMART Foundation‘s launched its Gabay Guro program.
Gabay Guro or 2G is a flagship project of the PLDT-Smart Foundation and supported by the PLDT Managers’ Club Inc. that aims to enhance education in the country through scholarship grants and English proficiency and computer literacy training programs for teachers. It also aims to help teachers augment their income through livelihood projects.
By helping mold excellent teachers, 2G hopes to spread the gift of learning to many more students in the country and thereby help in nation-building.
2G’s core programs are anchored on 5 pillars:
- educational grants,
- continuous teachers’ training,
- teachers tribute (through the Teachers’ Day campaign and 2G Tribute Card where teachers can avail of discounts from several partners),
- livelihood programs through micro-financing, and
- broadbanding public schools and providing refurbished computers from the PLDT Group.
This year, PLDT-Smart Foundation continues to change lives as it gives more training to more than 2,000 teachers nationwide. Aside from the regular English proficiency training sessions, a training program known as the Teacher’s Treasure Chest: Golden Lessons for Effective Teaching happened in Manila, Davao, Cebu and Cavite.
Also, in celebration of the heroes who shape the minds of the youth and inspire their future, PLDT-SMART’s Gabay Guro sends all its love to every teacher across the nation by giving a tribute concert event for the teachers held at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia last October 3, 2010.
Celebrities like Rhian Ramos, True Faith, Ruby Rodriguez, Bella Padilla, Rhian Ramos, Jay Durias, True Faith, EB Babes and Vernie Varga graced and performed at the concert titled “Live and Loud”. Derek Ramsay and Angelika Panganiban also made a short appearance to give thanks to those teachers.
There were also games and other activities like videoke prepared for the teachers. It was trully a fun-filled day for the teachers.
