Coins.ph Launches QRPh Crypto Payments in the Philippines

And I Got to Try It During My Daughter’s Birthday Food Crawl

As a mom, convenience is everything, especially during family celebrations. Between taking photos, checking orders, and making sure everyone is enjoying the food, the last thing I want is a stressful payment experience.

That’s why I was honestly impressed when I got to try the new QRPh Crypto Payment feature from Coins.ph during my daughter Sammy’s birthday food crawl.

What surprised me most was how natural the experience felt. We were simply enjoying Sammy’s birthday, hopping from one food stop to another, while using crypto quietly became part of our normal family day out.

Coins.ph recently announced the rollout of its QRPh Stablecoin Payment functionality, allowing users to pay using Philippine pesos, supported stablecoins like USDT and USDC, or even a combination of both within a single checkout flow.

For those unfamiliar, QRPh is the Philippines’ national QR code standard developed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas or BSP. It was designed to create a safer and more convenient digital payment system by allowing customers to scan one QR code regardless of which bank or e-wallet they use.

With this launch, Coins.ph became the first e-wallet in the Philippines to integrate stablecoin payment capabilities into the national QRPh system. The feature is already compatible with nearly 700,000 QRPh-enabled merchants nationwide, from small cafés and food stalls to larger retail establishments.

    Using the feature is simple:

    • Scan the merchant’s QRPh code through the Coins.ph app
    • Enter the payment amount
    • Choose your payment option
    • Confirm the transaction
    • Enter the verification code
    • Wait for the successful payment confirmation

One of the biggest advantages of the system is that users no longer need to manually convert crypto into cash before making purchases. The app automatically handles the conversion during checkout, making the process feel seamless and less intimidating even for casual users.

For the initial rollout, Coins.ph currently supports two of the world’s most widely used stablecoins:

    • USDT (Tether)
    • USDC

Since both stablecoins are pegged to the US dollar, they offer less price volatility compared to other cryptocurrencies, making them more practical for daily spending.

Another feature worth highlighting is the flexibility of payment options. Users can choose to pay fully in Philippine peso, fully in crypto, or use a hybrid setup combining both balances in one transaction.

According to Wei Zhou, the initiative is part of the company’s broader push to make crypto more relevant in daily life. “We want to simplify transactions for users who need the flexibility of being able to pay in peso or crypto,” he said.

He also shared that Coins.ph expects the feature to change how users handle everyday purchases, whether for quick coffee runs or weekend shopping trips.

The platform also includes safeguards for failed transactions. If a QRPh payment does not push through successfully, the crypto conversion is automatically reversed and the digital assets are returned to the user’s wallet. Refunds, meanwhile, are processed back in Philippine peso.

As someone who mainly uses digital wallets for convenience, I appreciate how simple Coins.ph made the experience feel. During our family food crawl, I didn’t have to think about complicated crypto processes or extra conversion steps. Everything happened directly inside the app in just a few taps.

Technology can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it involves cryptocurrency. But after using QRPh Stablecoin Payment firsthand during a real family celebration, I can honestly say it felt more practical than intimidating.

And honestly, paying for food during my daughter’s birthday using crypto still feels a little surreal — but also a glimpse of where digital payments in the Philippines may be headed next.
