Leading regional insurtech Igloo has partnered with the Philippines’ largest motorcycle ride-hailing platforms, Angkas, to protect riders with personal accident and medical insurance.
Ride-hailing services have become essential to urban mobility, especially in a country with a fragmented public transportation system. The fast-growing sector is projected to reach USD 1 billion in revenue by 2030.
Yet the riders who are the lifeblood of this ecosystem still lack insurance to protect them from accidents and costly medical expenses. Recognizing this protection gap, the Philippine Insurance Commission (IC) issued a draft circular proposing Passenger Personal Accident Insurance (PPAI) coverage for motorcycle taxis. This regulatory action underscores the growing national importance of securing financial and physical safety for both riders and passengers in the country’s expanding mobility sector.
Angkas is the Philippines’ largest motorcycle ride-hailing platform with over 20,000 registered riders and 11 million app downloads. Through this partnership with Igloo, Angkas riders are automatically enrolled in Personal Accident (PA) Plans, providing them and their passengers protection and medical coverage while fulfilling rides on the road.
“This partnership aims to provide thousands of Filipino riders access to affordable insurance embedded directly into the platform where they earn their livelihood, closing the protection gap by reaching them where they are,” said Raunak Mehta, Co-founder and CEO of Igloo. “At Igloo, our mission is to make insurance accessible, relevant, and affordable for all, and we will continue forging partnerships like this to advance that vision across the region.”
For a minimum premium of 52 cents per ride, riders and passengers are each protected with a personal accident insurance benefit of PHP 650,000 and medical coverage of PHP 200,000. This also comes with a free private ambulance service.
“Our riders’ safety is our top priority at Angkas, and this milestone partnership allows us to provide even more support for them. By working with Igloo, we’re able to offer accessible coverage that protects our riders and strengthens the trust that millions of Filipinos place in our service every day,” said Angeline Tham, Founder, Angkas.
This partnership is part of its broader mission to make insurance more inclusive, reaching underserved communities across Southeast Asia. By integrating protection directly into digital platforms used daily by millions, Igloo is helping bridge the insurance gap for gig workers and enabling safer, more secure commutes across the region.Learn more about Igloo’s products and services by visiting iglooinsure.com.
