Day-to-day life is made easier with our arsenal of mobile apps that cater to our personal needs – from setting up our morning alarm, to ordering food and booking a ride, to checking in on our friends and loved ones – all can be done using our smartphones or tablets. However, using all these apps also exposes us to dangers from the internet or other digital sources, such as online criminal attacks, malicious apps, and viruses.

One such threat is malware, short for malicious software, which can compromise the security of your device. Cybercriminals, or people who commit crimes using gadgets or through the internet, can use malware to steal your personal information, such as account login details and passwords. They can then use this sensitive data without your permission, assuming your identity to commit crimes. Malware can also slow down your device, drain your battery faster, and cause unexplained data usage.

CIMB Bank Philippines, the most awarded digital-only commercial bank in the Philippines, shares some key tips for you to keep your mobile device secure from malware:

Never click links or open attachments from suspicious emails

According to cybersecurity company Kasperksy, malware is purposefully designed to cause harm to you or your device. It can get into your device in many ways, like if you click on infected links or ads, or open attachments in a spam email. If you receive emails from addresses or names you don’t recognize, this may contain malware. Do not click on links or open attachments from these emails.

Install apps from official app stores only

When installing apps on your device, always download official app stores like the Apple App store or Google Play Store. This helps assure you that the app you’re eyeing has been tested and vetted to ensure that it is safe for you to install on your device.

Make sure your software is up to date

Check for updates regularly and make sure your device’s software is always up to date, as new fixes help address security issues. Doing so can help protect you against the newest malware and safeguard you from online threats.

CIMB Bank PH stresses the importance of securing your devices and encourages Filipinos to protect their personal information and maintain their digital privacy. CIMB also advocates for vigilance when transacting online and enjoins everyone to take charge of their personal finances through responsible banking. Remember that CIMB will never ask for your personal information and details like your MPIN or account number.

Opening a CIMB account is easy, and only takes a few minutes via the official CIMB mobile app. Filipinos who are at least 18 years old only need to prepare one valid ID to gain access to CIMB’s deposit and loan products, as well as special offers with groundbreaking high interest rates.

In case of any suspected malicious activity in your CIMB account, customers can also get help directly in the CIMB Bank PH app via the Need Help? Feature. You may also opt to get in touch with our Customer Care Team by calling #2462 (#CIMB) on your mobile phone or +632-8-924-2462 via landline.

CIMB Bank PH is part of the Malaysia-based CIMB Group, the 5th largest bank in ASEAN. To know more about CIMB Bank PH’s innovative products and offers, visit cimbbank.com.ph.
