Foolproof Strategies for Hiring Actors for Your Next Short Film

Actors are the beating heart of any short film. Even with an impeccable script and bold direction, a film is only complete with the right people to breathe life into its characters. That’s why casting is so important in the filmmaking process. It allows you to compare and contrast performers until you feel you’ve found the right person to embody the role.

Hiring the right actors for your film requires more than just putting a job listing online and reading the CVs that come in. You need a strategy. From character research to partnering with a talent agency to running screen tests. Here are a few ways to dive into casting with a plan of action:

    Understand Your Characters

Before you can effectively cast your characters, you need to get specific about who they are. Take your script and pull out all the relevant details about each character. Collect them all in one document you can reference. This is called a character breakdown. It should include all their basic characteristics, such as name, age, physical traits, relationship to other characters, and a general story arc.

You should also cover any less quantifiable characteristics that you think help define the character. Are they calm and collected, anxious and neurotic? Confident and charismatic, awkward and self-conscious? You’ll need to keep all this in mind to cast your characters effectively.

Cast a Wide Net for Talent

The more people you see in auditions, the more chances you’ll have to find someone perfect for the role. If you want to make sure your auditions give you enough choices, you’ll need to do a bit of groundwork to get the word out there.

These days, most of that can be done online. Actor’s Access, Backstage, and Casting Networks are widely used casting websites that allow you to post information about your auditions and actors to submit for the roles.

If you want a more organic route, you can also contact any local theater companies or acting schools in your area and tell them you’re holding auditions. Social media can also be a great place to look, both for sending out a wide casting call to all your followers and for finding various groups of actors looking to work. The right person for the role is out there; all you need to do is ensure they hear you’re looking for them.

    Bring on a Casting Director

If you’re overwhelmed with choices or would just like to add some expertise to your process, you may want to hire a casting director. Casting directors often work as part of a casting agency and focus solely on helping you find the right talent for your project. They use their familiarity with local talent to bring in people they think might be suitable for the role. They can also act as points of contact between you and the talent pool.

A casting director can be an important initial gatekeeper, running a preliminary round of auditions on their own and then reporting back to you with which performers they think merit consideration.

    Connect With Casting Agencies

A talent or casting agency is the tried-and-true way for an actor to find work in Hollywood. Talent agencies carefully manage their talent rosters to match their clients with roles suited to their talents. They can be excellent allies in helping you find people for your auditions, so do a little research and reach out to some you think might have the talent you’re looking for.

You can reach out to legacy agencies with massive rosters, but boutique agencies can have just as stellar talent. Working with a team like the InnoVision Talent Agency based in San Diego can be a great option for local productions seeking a diverse pool of talent.

Remember, what’s most important to establish when working with a talent casting is that they understand the project you’re trying to put together.

    Have Callbacks

Callbacks can be a hugely important part of the casting process, giving you and the talent in question another chance to dig deeper into the material. If you’re working with a casting agency, callbacks might be the first time you see the talent in person.

Callbacks allow you to spend more time with your prospective cast and see how they respond to any notes you might have. It also gives them another chance to show you their skills. Callbacks can also be a great opportunity to see more from actors who might not exactly fit your expectations for a role but who bring an exciting interpretation that you want to see more of. Above all, they help you winnow down your choices, allowing you to compare only the best from your initial auditions side by side.

    Try Out a Screen Test

Not everyone uses screen tests as part of their auditions, but they can be very helpful in determining if an actor is right for a role. You’re trying to make a short film, not a stage play. Seeing how your actors perform with a camera pointed at them and how they appear on screen can give you some real insight into how they would fare should you hire them. Plus, it allows you to put two actors on camera simultaneously, which can be very helpful in finding out whether they have chemistry.

Be Clear on the Project as a Whole

Ultimately, to effectively hire actors for your short film, you must keep the whole project in mind as a big picture. Think of the message you’re trying to convey and the tone you’re trying to express. Those things will help guide you through the process of finding your actors. Once you have that deep sense of what you’re trying to accomplish, you’ll know who will be right for the role. So go delve into your characters and find your nearest casting agency and get started. You have some work to do!
