When I was child, SM City North EDSA was the only mall I knew. Every time I asked my parents where would we shop or where would we watch a movie, SM North was their only answer to these questions.

SM City North EDSA is the very first and flagship SM Supermall owned by Henry Sy’s and his company, SM Prime Holdings. It is located at the intersection of North Avenue and Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Quezon City. SM City North EDSA, was opened in 1985 and started the Philippine “malling” phenomenon. The mall was then composed of just the main building and outdoor parking areas. SM North EDSA’s First major tenants are Jollibee, Ricky Reyes, National Bookstore, French Baker, Sportshouse, McDonald’s, Max’s of Manila, Goldilocks Bakeshop, Dimensione, Fabric Warehouse, and more.

A big part of my childhood memories were spent there. My dad’s family lived near the place so it was accessible to us. My mom and I used to shop for clothes, shoes, school supplies at the department store. While my dad and my brother would play some games at the arcade. After shopping, we usually went straight to SM Supermarket for groceries. Then we headed to my favorite food chain, A&W. My day in SM North EDSA would never be complete without A&W’s rootbeer float.

During my college days, SM North EDSA was still my first choice mall since it is accessible to my school. My usual past time was hanging out with my friends in SM North EDSA, watching movies, boys hunting and shopping. Even my first date with my husband (when he was still my boyfriend) was in SM North EDSA when we watched the movie Troy.

Though new malls were booming, SM City North EDSA plays a significant part of the Filipino lifestyle, especially with their new SKY GARDEN.

Sky Garden is located at the forefront of the mall just beside the busy, seemingly always congested highway, stretched from one end of “The Annex” to the end of “The Block”. Below the sky garden is the busy parking lots, loading and unloading area of buses and other public transportation. But once you go up using the Sky Garden’s escalator or elevator, you’ll see the difference. It’s like going up to heaven from hell.

In the Sky Garden, you can stroll along a landscaped and covered path, pleasantly lined with tropical trees, flowering plants, and shrubs. The Sky Garden is designed to be an oasis within the city, as this elevated garden softens the harsh urban environment with lush land and waterscapes, while its organic form also complements the new wavy cladding of the mall.

The Sky Garden’s attractions include the Roof Garden, the Sky Dome, Water Features, and retail, dining, and entertainment outlets. The well-manicured Roof Garden has about 55 species of plants, grass, and trees. All these plant species grow on a special type of garden soil which offers a lightweight effect on the structure. A truly green garden, it has a special type of drainage system that allows it to conserve water.

The Sky Dome is a performance area, which is open for concerts and promotional activities, providing further attractions and dynamism to the landscaped deck. It has a seating capacity of about 1,500 people and a movable stage to accommodate different types of events.

The Sky Garden’s water features include two bubblers, a simulated river flowing at the center, and waterfalls at the edge of the second floor, which will act as a monumental screen onto which various promotional montages can be projected, giving the park an added presence at the street level.

Completing the experience will be food and retail outlets that will give customers an al fresco dining and shopping experience. These include restaurants like La Mesa Grill, Persia Girll, Padi’s Point, Ineng’s BBQ, Pixie’s Sinugba, and Gerry’s Grill. And for coffee lovers, there will be coffee shops like Starbucks, Coffeeworks, Coffee Experience, and Curassco Express. Art’s Cream Gallery, Cello’s Donuts and Dips, Do Eat Cotton Candy, Ferino’s Bibingka, Green Mango, Kitchen of Cakes adn Coffee, Tita Lyn’s Suman, Fruits in Ice Cream, Heavenly Chocolate, Freshbar by Big Chill, Blushing Cupcakes and Chef Tony’s Popstore are some of the fun specialty food stores in the area.

The Sky Garden is open from 7am to 2am and it is accessible from many points. Its ground level has a vehicular parking and public transportation terminal, where customers can access the Sky Garden via escalators and stairs. There are driveways and drop off areas from EDSA for pedestrians, and the entire development will be connected to the combined LRT 1, MRT 1, and MRT 7 Grand Terminal in the future.

SM City North EDSA practices waste segregation showing they are really responsible in taking care of their community. Not only SM City North EDSA cares for the environment, they also care for their customers even the elderly and disabled. Their staffs were trained to handle customers’ needs.

Sky Garden is a perfect place to hangout with your family, friends and loved-ones.

There’s no doubt that SM City North EDSA has served as “the place to be” for most of the Filipinos. I can’t imagine my life witout SM City North EDSA . We have grown with it and I know my future children will grow with it too.

It is indeed that SM City North EDSA got it all for us.

The Sky Garden’s project team includes Arquitectonica, Conceptual Architect; W.V Conscolluela and Associates, Architect of Record; New Golden City Builders and Development Corp., general contractors; and DA Abcede and Associates, project manager.
