La Union, or “Elyu” as the locals call it, is a Philippine province that is a tropical paradise in more ways than one. Elyu is known for its exciting surf and beautiful beaches, but, for food enthusiasts like me, it is a hidden gastronomic paradise waiting to be explored. So, where to eat in La Union?

In this article, I’ll take you on a delightful journey through the top dining spots in La Union, revealing the best Elyu foodie destinations where you can savor gastronomic delights near La Union’s beautiful beaches.

Masa by the Barefoot Bakers is a hidden gem for people who love bread and pastries. Pan de coco, Spanish bread, croissants, and kamote doughnuts are among the delicious goodies at this famous bakery and café.

Their menu also includes Shakshouka, Morning Beef, Breakfast Burger, Tuna Melt, and more.

SHAKSHOUKA – two eggs poached in tomato sauce, cheese,
    kangkong, eggplant, cilantro, evoo, sambal
BREAKFAST BURGER – brioche bun, patty patty boom boom, cheese,
    eggs, bacon, tomato, greens
MORNING BEEF – salted beef shreds, sunny egg, kangkong,
    eggplant, pickled onion, cucumber, tomato
TUNA MELT – brioche, homemade tuna confit, cheese,
kewpie mayo, capers, onion, bonito flakes, cilantro

Masa Bakehouse is also a great place to relax and enjoy the delicious food of La Union because of its calm atmosphere and Instagram-worthy decor.

It’s best to get there early if you want to try some of Masa by the Barefoot Bakers’ delicious treats. This La Union bakery is so well-loved that its delectable pastries frequently sell out.

Masa by Barefoot is located at Costales Street, San Juan, La Union.

Halu Ice Cream (San Juan, La Union)

Located in the heart of Urbiztondo, La Union, Halu Ice Cream is a treat for anyone with a sweet tooth for high-quality coconut-based ice cream.

    Halu Ice Cream – Elyu’s must-try

This discovery offers a delectable range of flavors that are sure to satisfy every ice cream lover’s cravings. What sets Halu apart is its commitment to using fresh ingredients and catering to both non-vegan and vegan preferences.

During my visit to Halu, I had the pleasure of indulging in their extraordinary flavors:

Mango Tango and Choco Loco (Triple Choco)
    • Kimi: This creation is a delightful medley of waffle cone pudding, coco vanilla ice cream, and a sprinkle of colorful sprinkles. It’s a treat for the eyes and the taste buds.
    • Mango Tango: For mango enthusiasts, Mango Tango is a dream come true. It features mango ice cream adorned with mango bits, sliced mangoes, a sprinkle of tajin for that hint of spice, and a drizzle of tamarind syrup that adds a perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess.
A cup of Choco Loco (Triple Choco) with an optional cone on the side.
    • Choco Loco (Triple Choco): If you’re a chocoholic like me, Triple Choco is a must-try. This indulgent flavor boasts Auro chocolate ganache, chocolate chunks, and pure cacao with a hint of sea salt. It’s a symphony of rich, velvety chocolate flavors that make it a personal favorite among many.

And the best part? You can go classic with a cone, grab some buns, or go big with their famous kamote donut. Halu Ice Cream is not just about flavors; it’s an experience. WhWhere to Eat in La Unionere to Eat in La Union

Oh, and the shop offers more than just a sweet treat. It also has that chic, photogenic vibe that just ups the cool factor of your trip. Find Halu Ice Cream at Plaza de Castiel and let your taste buds (and your camera) thank you later!

    Doner Papa PH

Doner Papa PH is the fresh new face in Urbiztondo, La Union, and it’s causing quite a stir in the local food scene. Shawarma lovers, rejoice! They offer a range of options, including mixed meat, chicken, or falafel, and you can choose between a wrap or rice. But what truly sets them apart is the sheer size of their shawarmas.

The shawarma is huge! Take a look at the size comparison between my 8yr old daughter’s hand and that enormous shawarma, and you’ll see exactly what we mean!

Loaded with veggies and generously smothered in sauce, it’s a flavor-packed experience you won’t forget.

Currently on a soft opening, Doner Papa PH operates mainly from Friday to Sunday. To stay updated on their schedule, be sure to check out their Instagram or Facebook for their schedule. Located near Monaliza Surf Resort. Located near Monaliza Surf Resort, it’s a must-visit for shawarma enthusiasts and food explorers alike.

Steak To Juan – (Luna, La Union)

When you find yourself in Luna, La Union, a visit to Steak To Juan is an absolute must. Located just across from the famous Luna Watchtower (also known as Baluarte), this restaurant offers not only affordability but also generous portions, including unlimited rice.

If you’re wondering what to order, I highly recommend indulging in their delectable Sizzling Bagnet Sisig and savoring the flavorful Burgersteak.

Steak To Juan is a local favorite and a great place for tourists and locals alike to get a delicious lunch without breaking the bank.

    ALPAS La Union – Bacnotan

Nestled in the tranquil town of Bacnotan, La Union, Alpas is a haven that promises more than just a cafe experience—it’s a culinary escape crafted with love.

The cafe’s allure lies in its lush greenery which provides a relaxing atmosphere that harmonizes perfectly with the calming sound of the waves crashing on the nearby beach.

The vibes are undeniably chill, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy some quality time. With a spacious outdoor area that overlooks the stunning coastline, Alpas invites you to savor your choice of coffee while you await the mesmerizing sunset.

I ordered Iced Honey Cardamom something (I forgot the name). There was something uniquely delightful about that drink, something that enticed me to keep sipping. My husband chose the Cinnamon Latte, and we could tell it was going to be good just by the way it smelled. Rich and soothing tastes were waiting behind the smell that was so tempting. The generously served Cheesy Bacon Fries are also noteworthy. The bacon and cheese went well together, making every bite delicious.
