Having an air conditioning unit in your home is a must in a tropical country like the Philippines. The summers here can be quite brutal, with high levels of relative humidity and temperatures regularly rising above 30 degrees Celsius from March to June. Depending on where your home is located, how it’s oriented, and how it’s designed to withstand the effects of the outside elements, there’s a good chance that your home will bear the full force of the heat of the sun in the middle of the day. This will cause the temperature inside your home to rise, turning it into an unwelcoming place for your family and friends. More than that, extreme heat can also cause various health-related concerns like heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and severe dehydration. In such times, using an air conditioner can be a literal lifesaver.

Many Filipino families have chosen to install split-type air conditioners in their homes as a way to beat the heat and ensure the comfort of their loved ones even at the peak of summer. Compared to their window-type counterparts, split-type air conditioners are sleeker and quieter, and they can also cool a room much faster. These qualities make them a great option if you have specific requirements about your home’s aesthetic or you have limited space and a small number of windows in the property.

Investing in Your Split-Type Air Conditioning System by Maintaining It Properly

Air conditioners are an investment, and you want the split-type unit that you’ve purchased for your home to do its job consistently and effectively in the coming years. In addition to buying from a good brand, you also want to make sure that you are able to maintain your aircon regularly to extend its service life. Just like other types of appliances, air conditioners are also subject to regular wear and tear. Also, due to their specific function, the air conditioning unit in your home has to filter plenty of particles and pollutants in the air. The accumulation of these minor issues and debris can affect the performance of your air conditioner and cause you to consume more energy in order to maintain the comfortable indoor temperature of your home.

How Often Should You Have Your Air Conditioner Serviced?

To ensure that your split-type air conditioner is in good condition at all times, it’s best to have it serviced by an experienced professional technician every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often you use it and how heavily it is used. Your air conditioner technician will not only clean the unit, but they will also inspect it to see if all its internal and external components are working as they should. In case they see issues in the air conditioner, they’ll bring this to your attention and perhaps offer you options on how to avoid the problems that it might cause. With proper care, you can expect your split-type air conditioner to last you many years.

How Often Should You Clean Your Air Conditioner Filter?

How often you should clean your air conditioner filter depends on how heavily you use it, among other factors. Many people clean their aircon filters every month or so, but do remember that this unit cools the air inside your home. If you live with pets that shed a lot of fur, for example, then you can expect some of the loose strands to circulate in the air and end up in your air conditioner. If your home tends to accumulate a lot of dust and debris, then you can clean the filters every other week just to make sure that pollutants are not impeding the airflow in and out of the unit.

How Do You Clean the Split-Type Air Conditioning Unit in Your Home?

First, you need to make sure that your air conditioner is unplugged and that there’s a cleaning bag around it to prevent the dust from spreading to the different parts of your house. Next, open the front panel of the unit and remove the filters, then use a brush or vacuum cleaner to get rid of the clumps of debris. After that, rinse the filter in water, dry it out, and replace it. The condenser coils, on the other hand, can be sprayed with a cleaner. Let the solution sit for a few minutes, rinse as needed, and then let it dry before reassembling it.

The outdoor component of the aircon should be unplugged before it can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and a brush. Make sure to clean the inner fan and fins and allow all the components to dry thoroughly before the unit can be used again.

The right amount of care and maintenance will help you extend the service life of your split-type air conditioning unit. With a bit of TLC, you can make sure that your aircon will keep your home nice and cool even if the summers in the Philippines can be quite punishing.
