In case you haven’t heard yet, I am a blogger and also a home baker or more like a part-time baker. I really love cakes kaya I really got interested in baking. But I really got into it after visiting my friend Iris P. of entrepremom.info in Cebu back in January 2015. Iris and her husband Marcelle used to bake cakes and cupcakes. At na-encourage ako to bake when they showed me how to make cakes. Little did I know that this will spark my passion for baking and eventually WTF Cakes (Whattfilling)
The first thing I did when we got home from Cebu is to buy an oven. I kept practicing for about a month and my cousins got a free taste of all my baked goodies. By March 2015 I had my first customer, a cousin of mine who ordered 12 fondant cakes. I really didn’t know much about making fondants back then but nevertheless, I accepted the challenge. I worked on the order and became very happy with myself when I accomplished the task. From then on I continued to accept orders for cakes.
For the past three years, marami din akong orders na natanggap especially during Christmas Season. However, my customers are usually confined to my KKK list. Kamag-anak, Kaibigan, at Kakilala. I had one cousin who kept requesting me to make a DreamCake which is a fad nowadays. But I said to myself I didn’t want to join the badwagon or makisabay sa uso. Then one day my cousin suggested that we bond through baking. It was during that time when I tried to make my own version of DreamCake and it turned out to be a hit. Not just for my cousin but also with our friends. That was the start of WTF Cakes or Whattafilling Choco Loco. Well, modesty aside, who wouldn’t go loco with these in your cake:
5 layers of rich and decadent chocolate
😍 Chocolate Cake
This is the chocolate cake you’ve been dreaming of! 😉😉 #WtfCakesph #WTFChocoLoco #ChocoLoco #DreamCake
I started with 10 Choco Loco orders a week, then nag increase to 40 a week. I’m actually overwhelmed sa positive feedbacks that I got. Most of them are from people that are no longer within my KKK circle. It seems that the market for WTF Cakes is growing. Kaya I’m planning to stock up on ingredients and tin cans to meet my orders. The tin cans are especially important kasi sa taas ng demand, madalas out of stock or super pricey. One tin can costs upto 80 pesos, depende sa stock. As such purchasing the stocks I need will require extra cash.
I’m still a newbie in the business, so pinaiikot ko lng yung earnings ko. But if I want to grow my business I’ll need extra capital. My first thought was to get a loan but kulang ako sa requirements. Chances are my application will be denied or matatagalan ang processing.
The solution came one day as I was clearing clutter around the house. I found an old ring and earrings just sitting around and gathering dust.
They don’t fit me anymore so I never use them. But I couldn’t give them to my daughter because she is still too young. I thought about selling them pero nakakahinayang naman because my daughter can still use it in the future. It also has diamonds in it which means pwede pang tumaas ang value. Then I got the idea to pawn it for the capital I need to grow WTF Cakes.
what does it mean to pawn something
Pawn means Loan. When you Pawn something, it means you are leaving your collateral with the Pawnbroker who then lends you money. You pay back the money per the terms of the loan agreement and get your collateral back. It is the oldest form of banking.
I tried online pawn shop, but to be sure that I won’t get the short end of the deal, I asked my friends for their recommended pawn shop near me. I spoke with Iris P. and it so happened that she is also planning to visit a pawnshop for emergency funds to help her charity.
She has been an avid supporter of the Cancer Warriors Foundation – Cebu Chapter for several years now. They have a Grant A Wish program every December wherein children with cancer are asked to list down their Christmas Wishes. The Foundation and their benefactors will then try to make these wishes come true. A worthy cause that inspired me to also contribute to the program as a way for WTF Cakes to give back to society. And so Iris P. and I decided na sabay na kami magsangla.
WTF Cakes (Whattfilling ) GIVES BACK
We met up in Makati first before hitting different pawnshops to get an appraisal. Syempre, we used pawn shop locator para mas madali ang buhay. Our final choice was Cebuana Lhuillier primarily because it is the pawnshop with the highest appraisal. My ring and earrings got a Php13,000 appraisal from Cebuana Lhuillier while the other pawnshop valued it for only Php8,200. That’s almost Php 5,000 in difference.
Watch our Sangla Experience video and find out How To Pawn or Paano magsangla sa Cebuana Lhullier
how are interest rates and fees calculated for pawn loans
Cebuana Lhuillier assures highest appraisal and security for pawned items. Advance interest will be charged Php4 for every Php100 loan amount. To maintain the excellent standard of service offered by Cebuana Lhuillier, clients will be charged additional one percent (1%) of the principal loan, but not exceeding five pesos (Php5). No other hidden charges will be deducted from the loan.
Aside from low appraisals, there was also a long line of customers in the other pawnshop. It took us almost an hour just to get an appraisal. In contrast, there was no line at Cebuana Lhuillier and the service was fast. They have a dedicated window for pawn transactions kaya “Basta Sangla, Walang Pila”.
Another thing na nagustuhan ko sa Cebuana Lhuillier is the feeling that my valuables are safe and secure until I come back for them. My jewelry items were placed in a sealed plastic with my signature on the seal to help guarantee that it won’t be opened or tampered with. The best thing I like about dealing with Cebuana Lhuillier is that you can pay the interest at any of their branches. Sa dami ng branches ng Cebuana Lhuillier I doubt kung mahihirapan ka maghanap. They have more than 2,500 outlets and still counting! Parang there’s a Cebuana Lhuillier in every corner. Plus, Cebuana Lhullier one-stop website is very helpful, it has Branch locator, Appraisal Calculator, FAQs, everything you need to know about pawning.
I’m happy with my decision to pawn my old jewelry items because it allowed me to hit two birds with one stone. I got extra capital to grow my business and still have enough to help a charity program.
Hopefully, WTF Cakes will continue to grow and be a blessing to others too. But of course I will come back and retrieve my precious pieces of jewelry as promised.
