Understanding Deep Vein Thrombosis

If you have been experiencing symptoms that you feel are linked to deep vein thrombosis, it is helpful for you to understand how you can detect and treat the condition. Here are some useful facts about deep vein thrombosis.

Detecting

The symptoms of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) often characterized by physical pain or swelling in one or both of your legs. The pain typically starts at the calf and your leg may feel cramped or sore. You should closely monitor your symptoms, as serious complications such as a pulmonary embolism can stem from DVT. The symptoms of a pulmonary embolism can include shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or feeling dizzy or lightheaded.

Risk Factors

Whilst anyone can get DVT, there are some who are at a higher risk. Some of the people who are more at risk include the elderly, overweight or obese people, and those who are immobile or who have been recently hospitalized. DVT can also run in the family, so if you have a family history of blood clots, you may be more susceptible to getting DVT. If you are unsure about whether you are more at risk, it is best to speak to a healthcare professional who will be able to offer you help.

Ultrasound

The best way to help detect DVT is by having an ultrasound. An ultrasound can check what is going on inside your body and can help a doctor examine and identify whether you have signs of DVT. They will then be able to diagnose you and give you treatment options. The test is non-invasive and gives your doctor real-time imagery, so they can look at your veins and organs, which can help them determine how severe your DVT is and what action needs to be taken.

Treatment Options

There are a variety of drugs and medications that are used to treat DVT, including heparin. The drug is an anticoagulant, which thins the blood to help loosen and get rid of the clot. You will need to go to your doctor, who will be able to prescribe you the drug. After you have had heparin, you will need to be closely monitored by having blood tests each day, so your doctor can work out the right levels of the drug to administer. You may also be eligible for an eliquis coupon, which can be used to pay for certain treatments and medication.

Alternatives to Medicine

If you are wanting to steer away from medication, there are alternatives you can try to help with symptoms of DVT. If you are unable to use blood thinners, having a filter installed will help allow the passage of blood and trap any blood clots. The filter will need to be inserted into a large abdominal vein to prevent any blood clots that could break up from making their way to the lungs.

If you need more assistance on DVT or are unsure on what step to take next, it is always recommended to speak to a doctor, who will be able to address your concerns and give you the correct advice and help.
