How to start your own country

So, you’re tired of your country. You don’t like the government. Maybe you don’t like the taxes you pay or the services you get (or, rather, don’t get). So, why not start your own country? Sound crazy? In some respects it is. If you’re a peace-loving country, you can probably gain admission to the UN, but you also have to think about how to defend your new home and what the currency will be comprised of.

One of the hardest things to do is find unclaimed land. Most of the land in the world has already been claimed by one country or another and is defensible. If you don’t want to fight for an existing piece of land (probably not a good idea), then this limitation might stop you cold in your tracks – but if you’re not a quitter, you’ll keep looking.

When you find a place, you not only have to declare your independence from your mother country, you have an anthem to write, borders to design, and an army to raise. But, just for the fun of it, think about what it would take. There’s a lot more to it than you might think and, in some respects, a lot less.
