Mr. Kurosawa: 3 Amazing Items by 3 Amazing Chefs

March 3, 2012 By Mommy Iris 22 Comments

It’s only the third month of the year, and Mr. Kurosawa is already introducing gastronomic treats that are sure to whet every Japanese food lover’s appetite. However, who is Mr. Kurosawa, you might ask? Well, it’s not who but where. You see, Mr. Kurosawa is a Euro-Japanese restaurant that opened its first branch three years ago at Eastwood City in Libis, Quezon City. On its second year, it opened its Resorts World Manila branch, and that’s where I actually went. Mr. Kurosawa is a name inspired by the famed deceased Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. The same brilliant, collaborative minds that brought us John and Yoko and Sumo Sam owns and operates it.

Anyway, where there’s a fusion of European flair and Japanese minimalism, you should expect the unexpected. This was quite evident in the bold architectural design of the restaurant’s interiors, which obviously screamed European, and the Zen-ish backlit posters, samurai and geisha prints, and wide mirrors were definitely Japanese.

The potent Euro-Japanese fusion was exactly what I braced myself for when I went to Mr. Kurosawa to sample the new set of items they’re releasing this first quarter of the year.

So better set to raise the bar this year because Mr. Kurosawa is ready to serve you 3 new items:

KATSU

  • Fish Katsu
  • Shrimp Katsu
  • Ebi Katsu with Wasabi Mango Mayo
  • Tonkatsu Torikatsu

TEA

  • Sakura (Strawberry Yakult Milk Tea)
  • San Juru (Winter Melon Milk Tea)
  • Yojimbo (Matcha Milk Tea)

CHICKEN

  • Last Samurai Chicken Wings

Of the four Katsu variants, the Fish Katsu and Tonkatsu Torikatsu are more on the safe side as nothing too fancy or out of this world are added to make the dishes truly stand out. Though I really love the dip and the salad served on the side.

Fish Katsu

Tonkatsu Torikatsu

Wasabi Mayo, Tonkatsu Sauce, Spicy Ebiko Mayo  (dip)

The Ebi Katsu, on the other hand, was made even yummier by the Wasabi Mango Mayo where you could dip the shrimp.

Ebi Kastu

What I loved the most among the Katsus was the Shrimp Katsu not only because I love shrimps but also because of the flavorful mixture of minced shrimps, shitake mushrooms, and batter. Think burger patties except these are made with tasty shrimp. Drool-worthy, eh?

Shrimp Katsu

They also have a new chicken dish, which is the Last Samurai Chicken Wings. This one is somewhat like Buffalo wings with a fusion of sweetness and spiciness, which quite surprisingly hit off well with me.

Apart from the delectable dishes, they’re also introducing three new flavors to their milk tea selections. There’s the  Sakura (Strawberry Yakult Milk Tea), San Juru (Winter Melon Milk Teas), and Yojimbo (Matcha Milk Tea). Of the three, I loved San Juru.

Sakura and San Juru

Three amazing chefs prepared all the new treats and beverage. There’s Chef Christine Nicole Nicolas who graduated from the Center of Culinary Arts in Manila, and continued her studies at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, U.S.A. There’s Chef Benjamin Gonzales who happens to be the Executive Chef of the SumoSam Group of Restaurants. Finally, there’s Chef Florabel Co-Yatco who is president and CEO of her own chain of 12 restaurants.

Great images to go with a great post.

I'm specially intrigued with the milk tea they are offering. I have not had them here (Germany or in the Netherlands) before in any Eurasian restaurants I've visited.

Di talaga ako fan ng "panlasang" japanese, pero fan ako ng "way" nila ng pagluluto. nakakalito ba? haha. addik ako dati sa Iron Chefs, ibang klase kasi yung mga kamay nila, the speed, the techniques, ai nakuuu 😀

It’s been a while since I’ve last eaten at Mr. Kurosawa. It’s nice that they’re widening their food selection. I hope the Katsus really good though. Most Japanese restos kasi offer mediocre to very dry katsus >.< So far I've only liked Yabu's.

Now that is something to visit. I got a bit confused on the KATSU dish though – i thought Ebi is the Japanese word for shrimp.

The mere thought of having a meal with Japanese and Euro blend is enough of a guaranteed hearty meal. Thanks for featuring this.

      Hi dimaks,

yes, Ebi is shrimp. for the katsus they have 2 dishes for the shrimps: the ebi katsu and the shrimp katsu. the only difference is the shrimp katsu is a mixture of minced shrimps, shitake mushrooms, and batter. And Ebi katsu is like a tempura =)
