    Clash of the Titans

In this hi-tech era where almost everything is done with or through the aid of computers, film makers are not exempted from this new generation which resulted to the production of several three dimension, popularly know as 3D, movies. In fact, a lot of interesting 3D movies have been shown lately, like the multi-awarded Avatar and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and there are still more to come later this year.

Clash of the Titans is of these 3D films that will be shown on the 2nd of April this year (Clash of the Titans movie will be showing in all Philippine theaters on April 3, 2010). It is actually a remake of the original film which was produced in 1981, almost 30 years ago. So what do we expect after 30 years? Yes, you’re right! We can expect for a much better animation and computer-generated scenes in this 2010 version of the Clash of the Titans.

2010 remake version of Clash of the Titans is directed by the famous director, Louis Leterrier , who also brought us several action-packed movies like the Unleashed (aka Danny the Dog) which starred Jet Li, Transporter and The Incredible Hulk. The development of the movie has started as early as 2002 but the producers decided to revive the story, with the help of Travis Beacham, in 2006, while Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi redone the original script that gave them the PG-13 rating. Artist Aaron Sims confessed that among the film’s Greek Mythology characters, the design for the character of Medusa gave him a headache because he can’t decide on how would the snake on her head would like. Anyway, the filming began early last year, April 27, 2009, in London at Shepperton Studios, at Wales and at the Canary Islands.

This movie stars several powerful and great actors like Sam Worthington, who plays Perseus, the main character of the movie. Worthington also played a major role in the hit movie, the Avatar. Also starring are Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Liam Neeson, who played the role of Zeus and Natalia Vodianova as Medusa, among others.

    The Plot

The story of this year’s Clash of the Titans is loosely based from the original one, where the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus is helpless to save his family from Hades, vengeful god of the underworld.

With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

    Review

There’s good news and bad news for Clash of the Titans fans.

    Good
Visual effects are great plus impressive production design and costumes. The monsters are represented effectively in Computer-generated imagery (CGI).

Actors are great; they all fulfill their roles especially Ralph Fiennes (Hades). Great casting. Gemma Arterton (Io)  is so beautiful in this film =)

    Bad
3D is poorly executed. Originally, the Clash of the Titans was set for standard (not 3D) release on March 26, 2010 but they found out that converting it to 3D is much better, perfect and timely for this new generation, where 3D films are in and so the play date was changed to April 2, 2010 to give them more time for the conversion. In short, the movie was made in 2D, then they added 3D elements after. They filmed the movie with regular cameras instead of the new 3D camera that used in movies such as Avatar.  So don’t expect much on the 3D.

    The Verdict

I personally rate as 6 out 10. Despite the poorly executed 3D, I still end up enjoying the movie.

CLASH OF THE TITANS will be on Philippine theaters starting April 3, distributed by Warner Bros. Philippines.

Update From the SM Marketing Group: Clash of the Titans will NOT be shown in IMAX. It can still however be seen in full 3D at SM Digital Theaters all over the country. Clash of the Titans opens on April 3, 2010, in SM Cinemas.

i don’t know who is sam worthington prior to this film. and i find him handsome but has very ordinary acting skill. although it is passable since its is action movie.

i think the story and strong support cast are the strengths of the movie.
