When was the last time you looked at the mirror and talked to it with all honesty? This predicament is a tale as old as time for women everywhere; echoed by the immortal line, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?”
What makes a mirror special is its appeal to your vanity. It does not just reflect your physical state but also your inner emotions; even your mental state. So simply looking at the mirror could give you an overview of how your total well-being could be – inside and out!
With this, comedienne Giselle Sanchez brings to life “Salaminkera,” a mirror that actually talks to you and tells you about your career, family life, and love life. After all, Salaminkera is inspired by the magic mirror of the evil queen from the timeless tale of SnowWhite; and provides honest answers to any question. As part of its 85th Founding Anniversary celebrations, Far Eastern University is staging a one-night only performance in concert version of Felipe Padilla de Leon’s opera, “Noli Me Tangere”, on January 24, 5:00 pm at the historic FEU Auditorium.
The production which features the original cast of Dulaang UP’s successful staging of this opera brings to life the story of Crisostomo Ibarra, who returns to the Philippines after studying in Europe, only to discover how deeply corruption perpetuated by Spanish friars has hurt his country and his family.
The production, which is also part of FEU’s 2012-2013 cultural season, marks the opera’s return to FEU after it had its world premiere at the FEU Auditorium in 1957. It also coincides with the centenary of its composer who became a National Artist for Music.
The country’s brightest operatic talents will portray the novel’s main characters, with Ivan Nerry starring as Ibarra; Myramae Meneses as his star-crossed love Maria Clara; Elaine Vibal as the tragic Sisa; and Jonathan Velasco as the hateful Padre Damaso. The opera will be directed by Alexander Cortez with musical direction by Camille Lopez Molina.
“FEU has always been proud to showcase the talents of Filipino artists, and Noli Me Tangere provides rich material that is historical and relevant at the same time,” said Martin Lopez, Executive Director of FEU’s President’s Committee on Culture. “We are indeed proud to stage the concert version of this opera on our anniversary, and more than 50 years after we first hosted its premiere, which reflects FEU’s continuing commitment to the arts and its glorious heritage, which incidentally is the theme of its 85th Founding Anniversary”
The performance is free and open to the public. For reservations and other inquiries, please contact the FEU-PCC through 736-4897.
