From December 25 to January 1, 2012, Uncle Sam’s Flying Circus will give Filipino audiences a smorgasbord of holiday cheer as it brings its brand of heart-warming and death-defying spectacles that will surely be a hit among kids and kids-at-heart.

One of the show’s most breathtaking highlights is the Double Russian Swing act, which involves two giant steel swings that allow performers to rock back and forth to create momentum to launch 25-feet in the air. The aerial performers simultaneously whizz past each other while spinning and contorting their bodies. It’s a must-see act requiring extreme precision, timing and courage.

Also included in the show’s lineup of performers are highly-skilled acrobats who display amazing feats of strength and dexterity. Whether going through intricate ‘acro-balancing’ contortions that seemingly defy gravity, or literally risking life and limb as they breeze through the air with clockwork precision, these daredevils will definitely draw shrieks and gasps of disbelief from a spellbound audience.

Of course, no circus would be complete without the traditional clowns. Wearing their eternal smiles and flamboyant outfits, these ambassadors of good cheer never fail to elicit laughs with their rib-tickling antics, with a good dose of juggling, balancing and acrobatic displays thrown in for good measure.

Also known as human pretzels, contortionists never fail to amaze audiences with their amazing feats of flexibility and dexterity. With their uncanny ability to twist and turn their limbs in limitless positions, they oftentimes give the impression that their supple and resilient bodies are made of rubber.

Musical performances also add to the act, including impersonators guaranteed to rouse the crowd with their tribute performances of Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, featuring the same larger-than-life theatrics, phenomenal costume changes and a bevy of spirited back-up dancers.

Renowned as one of the world’s ‘quick-change’ artists, Athena is currently ranked as the number one Lady Gaga tribute artist in the world.

An electrifying display of drumming virtuosity and provocative percussion playing is also expected to get the audience in the proper holiday groove.

Uncle Sam’s Flying Circus is comprised of a professional cast of fifth and sixth generation circus performers, headed by New Zealand-based promoter and Harris Agency CEO Doug Harris, and show producer Enrique Valencia – himself a versatile and prolific circus performer with several years of professional experience in the global entertainment circuit.

Uncle Sam’s Flying Circus is scheduled for a series of matinee shows starting 4:00 p.m. from December 26 to December 30, with evening shows at 7:00 p.m & on December 25 & January 1, there are 2:00 p.m, 5:00 p.m and 8:00 p.m. performances.

The world’s renowned Canada-based circus, the Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun), has invaded the Philippines for another heart stopping and death defying dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment show dubbed as “Varekai”. In Romany language of the gypsies (the universal wanderers), Varekai means “wherever”. Circque du Soleil will be shown in a giant blue and yellow 66 feet and 167 feet in diameter, high tent called Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) starting June 22, 2011 until July 24, 2011. The canvas for the tent, and its 11 tunnels, weighs more than 5,227 kilograms. It is entirely climate-controlled and self-powered with generators. It stands at the Quirino Grandstand for a wider space and can accommodate more than 2,600 people. The place is not too big yet not too small, seeing the performers and their props far from the stage is not a problem and steiner binoculars are not a necessity anymore. =)

Varekai is written and directed by Dominique Champagne and brought in the Philippines by Hoopla, Inc. in cooperation with Manila Hotel and Banco De Oro together with Sun Life Financial.

Gone are those days where Filipinos have to travel abroad like in Macau, Hong Kong or Singapore just to witness grand productions like Varekai. Circque du Soleil’s Varekai has been traveling all over the world (North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe) for nine years now. Finally, Varekai reached Asia starting with Taiwan in January and now, they’re here in the Philippines to let the Filipino people and other neighboring countries experience the magical world of “Varekai”.

Here’s a little background about Varekai:

Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai. The sky lets go a solitary young man, Icarus, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind.

This production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai. Varekai emerges from an explosive fusion of drama and acrobatics. The impossible becomes possible in stunning displays of skill and power set against innovative music and otherworldly sets, interwoven with vivid choreography that speaks to all in the universal language of movement. The pendulum of time sweeps backward, paying tribute to the ancient and rare circus traditions of Icarian games, water meteors and Georgian dance. Varekai then catapults to the future with revolutionary twists on such acts as Russian swings, slippery surface and triple trapeze.

Varekai is consisted of 13 breathtaking acts and one comedy act, performed by professional artists from all over the world. Varekai is composed of 130 people from its casts and crew coming from 25 countries, which are Canada, USA, Russia, Australia, Spain, China, Italy, Ukraine, UK, Brazil, Germany, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, France, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Argentina, Belgium, Hungary, Mexico, New Zealand, Serbia, Sweden and South Africa. The two-hour show are consisted of Aerial Hoop, Aerial Straps, Clown Acts, The Flight of Icarus, The Georgian Dance, Hand Balancing on Canes, Icarian Games,  Lightbulb, Russian Swings, Slippery Surface, Solo on Crutches, Triple Trapeze and Water Meteors.

Being privileged to be one of the media audiences last night for the advance performance of this once-in-a-lifetime act, I was very lucky to witness the heart stopping stunts that each act delivered. I even screamed for a stunt done during the Russian Swings and mesmerized by the performance of the Aerial Straps. I really can’t believe how these artists can execute those unbelievable stunts that really stretched human imagination. For two hours, I forgot the real world and I felt like I was driven into the mystical world of Varekai. Yes, that’s how great the performers are!

I guarantee you, you will be truly awed by their performances and you will consider yourself very lucky to witness this one-of-a-kind, outstanding show. You better see it for yourself. What even made the show exceptional and really world-class is the7-piece band, composed of bandleader/keyboards player, a second keyboard player, drummer, percussionist, bassist, violinist and a wind instruments player, plus 2 singers—one male (The Patriarch) and one female (The Muse), performing live enchanting music during each the acts.

Don’t let this once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness Cirque du Soleil and their Varekai performance pass. It’s truly amazing!

In support for this vision, last April 27, 2011, we, the blogging community and the traditional media, were invited to visit the GSK’s plant at Cainta, Rizal and attend the GSK’s Road To Good Health talk.

Before we had the tour inside the plant, we were requested to leave our stuffs and wear the sanitation suit. This is to make sure that we are sort of sterile when we enter the plant so as not to contaminate the manufacturing process.

We were guided to the laboratory where the actual maxing of the chemicals to make certain drugs were done, then we witnessed how Ventolin, an asthma medicine, were packed. We are also privileged to see several equipments and devices were present inside the manufacturing laboratory as we explore the plant.

After the tour, we were lucky to receive free flu vaccination. Then, we traveled to Pinto Gallery in Antipolo for our lunch and for the GSK’s Road To Good Health talk.

The GSK’s Road To Good Health tackled the issues on how health priorities tend to decline due to several factors such as the cost of medicines and/or the influence of other people recommending the consumers to go with the cheaper ones despite the unsure quality. Also, the GSK’s commitment to improve good health of the Filipinos was emphasized.

PMA (Philippine Medical Association) President, Dr. Oscar Tinio, started the talk regarding the ethical practices, prescription law and the importance of good and quality healthcare, while GSK’s VP for Government and External Affairs, Ms. Daisy Cembrano, discussed how pharmaceutical companies prolong life and pointed out GSK’s continuous effort in providing Filipinos quality medicines at a cheaper price as compared to other branded drugs available. A DOH Representative was also present during the talk and even presented a video regarding PhilHealth and how it helped millions of Filipino people. To make the event more momentous, the GSK Philippine President and Managing Director Roberto Taboada graced the occasion and talked about the main objective of the company, which is to provide Filipino people high quality medicines at a price affordable to the financially grieving masses.

The company even bragged about their constant endeavor to maintain high quality but cheaper medicines as part of their social responsibility. They are able to do so because they do their own share of energy conservation, which in turn greatly affects the cost of their operating expenses. According to them, one of their ways of doing so is to utilize natural light, through their Solar Tubes, instead of using numerous lamps or bulbs to light the area during manufacturing.

To sum it up, the experience of attending GSK’s Road To Health have awaken my consciousness on new aspects of providing quality health care to every individual. Before, I don’t worry about the cost of the medicines and I don’t try to bother myself with the so-called social responsibility. After the talk, I am determined to be socially responsible, especially with the health aspects, by promoting it (from time to time) in my blogs, so that my readers will also be aware of these issues.

The outdoor roller skating rink, the stone lanterns at the Chinese Garden, the dancing fountains, the slides at the playground and the stone-paved bridges at the Japanese Garden are just some of the wonderful things I remember about Luneta Park.

Luneta Park or Rizal Park, as it is officially known, is named after our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal as a tribute to his heroism. It was where he was executed by firing squad on December 30, 1896.

But with the advent of malls, a weekend visit to Luneta Park has taken a back seat. More and more people are opting to visit the mall with their family instead of a park that has become filthy and unsafe because of neglect.

Lately, however, Luneta Park has been undergoing major changes. Aside from having police and security officers stationed at key places within the park and nearby premises, the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) has installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in their effort to provide added security to those who visit the park. With the help of volunteers and several private organizations and companies, several amenities are being introduced and existing facilities are being developed.

All of these are being done in preparation for the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal. The rehabilitation and the re-opening of the dancing fountain late last year alone has made Luneta Park a must visit place for families once again.

The renovation of the Children’s Playground has made the park more appealing and child-friendly.

The Relief Map with Luzviminda Boardwalk, was also inaugurated last May 20, 2011. Also, NPDC has come up with a new “One Stop” Heritage Trail around the relief map which serves as an overview of all the historical sites relating to the life of Dr. Jose Rizal. All heritage sites will be installed (in 2-D tarp) strategically around the map with illumination. Each will be labeled/captioned containing its historical highlights with relevance to Dr. Jose Rizal.

The Noli Me Tangere Gardens, with the Heidelberg Fountain as its centrepiece, will be inaugurated on June 12, 2011. The Heidelberg fountain is same fountain from which Jose Rizal used to drink from when he was in Germany.

Stage plays, musical competitions, art and cooking competitions and a musical concert are among the various activities scheduled on June 18-19, 2011 at the Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park.

On June 17-19, 2011, documentaries and film adaptations of the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal will be shown at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium.

Immediate plans also include having wi-fi free zones, the renovation of Rizal monument, the repair of the park’s underground drainage system and possible underground parking spaces and passages.

With all the changes and improvements that are set to take place at Luneta Park, finding the perfect place for family bonding won’t be a difficult task.

When I received the invitation, I thought to myself how could I ever say no to Magnolia. Apparently, I grew up eating delectable ice cream from Magnolia. The pinipig crunch was particularly my favorite. My summer is simply incomplete without getting frequent tastes of it. When I said yes to the invitation I knew I was in for some treats and I was right. There were plenty of surprises from the party itself.

Magnolia relaunched 4 frozen delights and introduced its new Spinner during that awesome night.

The spinner which is an ice cream cone with chocolate ripple topped with nuts that comes in flavors of chocolate and vanilla sold at 20 pesos each, the fun bars which are ice cream sticks dipped on chocolate which comes in a variety of colors depending on their flavors sold for only 10 pesos each, the sweetie bites which are also ice cream on sticks but with special inclusions such as cookies or cheese and that comes in flavors of cookie craze or cheesy bliss sold for only 11 pesos each, my ever favorite pinipig crunch sold for 13 pesos each and lastly, the popsies which are ice lolly ice creams that comes in choco cool flavor or orange hill sold for 10 pesos each.

We were stuffed after we enjoyed the sumptuous dinner buffer prepared for us before the program even began. We were served with pasta, tacos, taquitos and a lot more. The Velasco Brothers performed for the opening which awakened the excitement and thrill from everybody in the event. My eyes were wide opened as I witnessed their performance live. It was really good to say the least.

The party was hosted by Rizza Diaz and after the dance performance of the Velasco Brothers, an introduction to Magnolia was given and then a speech from the General Manager followed.

Attending this blogger party is such a fun experience which made me appreciate this brand of ice cream even better. I may be all grown up now but I am still kid at heart when it comes to my favorite – Magnolia Ice Cream.
