It’s not every day that you get the opportunity to meet Maja Salvador, one of the most promising young actresses in the Philippine industry. That’s why I was so thrilled when I received an invite for an intimate dinner with “Thelma” casts and director.
Thelma Bloggers Night happened last August 31, 2011 at Yellow Cab, UP Techno Hub. Despite the intermittent heavy rain, the venue was jam-packed with bloggers, and of course the casts and director of Thelma.
Jason Abalos, Maja Salvador, Director Paul Soriano, Tetchie Agbayani, John Arcilla were able to answer all the questions thrown at them.
During the question and answer, Director Paul Soriano clarified that the film is not the based on the true-to-life story of athlete Elma Muros (who portrays a running coach in the story). The film is based and inspired by true stories of Filipino athletes, in particular, runners”, he said. However, running, as explained by Direk Paul, is merely a subplot in the movie, as Thelma is also a story of dreams, determination and making the right decisions.
Direk Paul believes the role is really meant for Maja. “When you watch the film, it’s not Maja you will see but the character she plays,” the director added.
Maja gave her full commitment to the indie project and Director Paul was really impressed. For 6 straight weeks, Maja trained hard in order to literraly fit for the role of Thelma. She trained under Philippine Track and Field champion Elma Muros. Earlier this year, the young actress was rushed to the hospital because she collapsed after filming a running scene in the movie. But after several hours, Maja insisted to continue with the shoot despite the pain she was feeling.
“Maja iterally gave her all – blood, sweat, and tears to this movie,” said direk Paul.
Thelma is a story of a simple young girl from the province named Thelma (played by Maja Salvador) whose family is beset with challenges when she discovers her uncanny gift of speed. Her talent then opens doors for her – to elevate her family’s situation and change the course of her own life. But to do that she will have to run- against all obstacles, against personal hindrances, against shadows from her past, and against her own self-doubts.
“Some people run away from their problems. She ran to fix them.”
